Politics and the effect on Employment law again…?!

 | Comments ()

Jeremy Corbyn, currently the favourite to become the next Labour leader, has published a quasi-manifesto document, 'Working With Women'

In it, he sets out the following employment law / HR related goals:-

  • abolishing employment tribunal fees
  • giving all workers unfair dismissal rights from day 1 (Note: definition of workers is not clear)
  • extend the 3-month limitation period for sex / maternity discrimination claims
  • mandatory equal pay audits for all companies, irrespective of size
  • strengthen trade union recognition and bargaining

Comment: Interesting times for the Labour Party regarding the contest for the leadership role. Will this news about his view on employment matters help his cause or not?

Guides on Equality produced by Acas

ACAS has published 3 new useful guides on equality:

This guide outlines the basics of what employers of any business and their employees must and should do to make their workplaces a fair environment to comply with equality legislation. They cover the nine areas known as protected characteristics (disability, age, race, gender etc) as well as the different types of discrimination i.e. direct; indirect; harassment; and victimisation.

  • 1. Equality and Discrimination: Understand the basics
  • 1. Prevent Discrimination: Support equality
  • 2. Discrimination: What to do if it happens

The second and third guides help businesses and their employees understand their role in promoting equality and diversity, and preventing discrimination and what they should do if discrimination happens or is alleged to have happened within the workplace.

Check them out here

Comment: Like most Acas guides, they are pretty detailed and set out ‘best practice’ for businesses.
