From Temporary to Permanent

Provide them with a permanent contract format recognising their service from the start date of their temp contract.

Q: We currently have an employee on a 1 year fixed term (temporary) contract and although they have only been employed for a few months they are so good we would like to employ them permanently, what do we need to do?

A: I will presume the following 1. The person will be doing the same job and 2. The person is actually happy to become a permanent employee going forward (some people prefer temp/fixed term contracts and happy to move between employers after a short length of time due to their own personal circumstances).

Really if there will be no break in service then you should simply provide them with a permanent contract format and ensure it recognises their length of service from the start date of their temp contract. Obviously there may be other practical and operational considerations to re the new perm post e.g. new reporting lines, whether subject to a probationary period, induction process, new / different terms to agree, negotiate on etc etc
